Howard Charles Barth, Jr. was born in Maywood, California, May 14th, 1947 and adopted by Howard and Corrine Barth. The family moved to El Segundo, California in 1950 where he attended school until beginning his studies at Concordia Teachers College in Oakland, California. After receiving his Associate of Arts degree he continued his education at Concordia Teachers College in Seward, Nebraska and received his Bachelor’s of Science degree in 1970.
His first teaching position was at Faith Lutheran Church / School in Whittier, California and a few years later continued at Grace Lutheran in Escondido, California. Moving to Caldwell, Idaho he served as editor and illustrator for the Creation Science Children’s magazines. He then received a call from St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Boise, Idaho to serve as Director of Christian Education. Howard also served as Principal at Zion Lutheran School in Nampa, Idaho. He was member of the Pacific Northwest Lutheran Youth Board and worked on various district projects as well as providing artwork for Concordia Teachers College in Portland, Oregon.
After a return to Grace Lutheran School in Escondido, Howard entered the seminary at Fort Wayne, Indiana in 1992 and completed his vicarage at First Lutheran Church in Temple City, California. Howard was ordained on September 17, 1995 at St. Matthew Lutheran Church in Temple City, California. Howard also served as Pastoral Circuit Counselor for the Lutheran Women’s Missionary League.
Howard and Linda (nee Heyman) of Hanford, California were married on December 26, 1971 and while in Boise, Idaho were blessed with two daughters, Cori (1978) and Susan (1980). Cori lives in Portland, Oregon with her husband Todd Sellers. Susan resides in Long Beach, California with her husband Aaron Guerrero.
